AI for Networks

Fraunhofer FOKUS investigates artificial intelligence and machine learning for 5G/6G networks, with a focus on AI-based network optimization, prediction, adaptation, and autonomous operation. Open6GCore provides an executable mobile network environment in which AI algorithms can access network information, influence network behavior and be evaluated in running end-to-end experiments.

Our research covers AI for network control and optimization across RAN and core network functions. Existing work includes near-real-time topology control, user distribution across available radio resources, mobility optimization, and dynamic resource allocation. AI-based algorithms can coordinate these mechanisms according to the current network state and service requirements.

Network adaptations frequently affect several objectives simultaneously. Open6GCore therefore supports research on coordinated AI-driven decisions considering network performance, service quality, reliability, security and energy efficiency across the overall system.

Research Topics

  • AI/ML-based network optimization
  • Prediction of network conditions and demand
  • Mobility and user-distribution optimization
  • Dynamic resource allocation
  • Network topology adaptation
  • Anomaly detection and handling
  • Coordinated RAN-core optimization
  • Autonomous and AI-native network operations

Open6GCore provides the software, network interfaces, observability and control capabilities required to move AI algorithms from models and simulations into experimentally validated 5G/6G network implementations and end-to-end testbeds.
