Fraunhofer FOKUS investigates automation for complex 5G/6G networks, where RAN, core, transport, cloud and edge infrastructure continuously influence each other. In such systems, independent policies and control loops can create conflicting decisions or cascading adaptations, because a change in one part of the network modifies the conditions seen by others.
Our research addresses holistic and closed-loop network automation. Service requirements can be expressed as intents and SLAs, while the network continuously observes its current state, correlates with events and identifies the underlying cause of abnormal behavior. Based on this system-wide context, the automation framework can select a coordinated correction rather than triggering isolated actions.
The resulting treatment is an ordered set of actions executed across the affected network functions and infrastructure. Its effects can then be observed and evaluated, allowing the automation loop to verify whether the required service state has been restored and to improve future responses.
